Affirmations: Do You Really Need It? This Will Help You Decide!

Affirmations are words or phrases of positivity that is repeated in line with someone’s beliefs. It is a way of making a positive suggestion to the subconscious mind to enhance well-being and attract success.

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, affirmations sound like a cheesy concept. However, it’s a tried-and-tested method that the world’s most successful people have utilized.

If you grab any book on success, more likely than not, you’ll find a section on positive thinking. You’ll definitely find several books dedicated to positive thinking on your local bookstore’s self-improvement section like The Secret, The Power of Positive Thinking, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, Think and Grow Rich, The Magic of Thinking Big, and many more.

I've always believed in the magic of positive thinking and how it impacts our lives. You think your life into existence. If you think you can or can't do something - you're right either way. Be more conscious of your thoughts and really work on filtering out the negativity in your life.

Affirmations can help make propitious changes in your life such as sticking to an exercise regimen, a dietary plan, or a financial goal. Generally, affirmations can help improve your attitude towards life. It's short, easy to remember and effective.

Here's a quick guide on how you can use affirmations to change your life:

1. Be concise

An affirmation can be anything - a quotation from a famous philosopher or a made-up motto. Try to keep your affirmations concise as it will allow you to remember them easily and repeat them more frequently (fewer words).

2. Use the present tense

The subconscious mind takes things literally and if you say things like “I will be healthy” or “I will lose weight”, it will always stay in the future and will less likely be actualized. Instead, try saying “I’m healthy” or “I’m losing weight”.

3. Focus on the positive

For some reason, the subconscious mind is not able to deal with negativity. If you say something like “I’m not poor”, the mind filters out the “not” and registers as “I’m poor”. Instead, try saying “I’m rich” or “I’m wealthy”. Do not use the negatives of what you have to achieve in your life (“not” overweight, “not” unhealthy, etc.).

4. Feel good

An average person has between 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day! Unfortunately, no one can filter all these thoughts and weed out the negative from the positive. An awesome strategy you can use is to feel good as much as you can! You can’t control all your thoughts, but you can control your emotions.

Difficult situations will come and you’ll be emotionally down - that’s alright! It’s normal to feel sad, angry or jealous. It’s a matter of catching yourself at these moments and pointing your emotions (and consequently your thoughts) to the right direction.

5. Make it meaningful

Your affirmations have to be something you truly believe in. If you're forcing yourself to use affirmations that are not meaningful, then your life will not work to align with your thoughts.

Affirmations are just words, but they have the power to change your life and help you live the life you imagined if used correctly.
